Spirit, more often then not, communicates through Universal languages. This means that Spirit communicates in ways that we are all (more) likely to understand.
One main reason for this, is that it takes practice for those in Spirit to learn how to communicate with souls on earth. Likewise, takes practice for those of us on earth to learn how to receive and interpret the communications from Spirit. Because every soul on earth and in Spirit is different, and has their own unique perspective and manner of expression, one could imagine that it would be difficult - even impossible - for each loved one in Spirit to communicate to each soul on earth in a unique way.
Don't get me wrong now--> those Spirits with whom you work very closely may have a special way of communicating with you that is unique to your relationship, and that works well for the two of you. However, when you look at Spirit communication on a grander scale, it is easy to see the need for a Universal language of sorts for Spirit and people on earth who receive messages from many different Spirits (and then deliver them to many different people) in a short amount of time, such as mediums do.
Mediums and their clients simply do not always have the time for lengthy, in-depth accounts, and when we are working with a client, we need Spirit to communicate as clearly and quickly as possible. Spirit understands the urgency and strives to communicate the most information with as few words, thoughts, or feelings, as is possible.
The main routes that Spirit uses to quickly relay messages and information about a person or situation are: Myth, Metaphor, and Idioms (or other commonly known expressions).
I believe this is because all human beings have from birth the imprint of the universal myths and archetypes in their psyche, so it is something that we can all relate to. Idioms too, by definition, relate more information than what lies on the surface, but usually with more modernity than myth.
This Universal language of Spirit isn't only used with Mediums, but with all of humanity. Consider messages that come through in your dreams, or signs that you receive in the physical --> they can be easily overlooked at a surface level, and typically require some quiet, contemplative time to gather the full story and apply it to your life. Usually this requires relating the 'hidden' message to a known myth, archetype, or metaphor, and then deducing how it applies to your life or current situation.
Take two examples:
In a dream, you are devoured by a snake. What does this mean?? Perhaps it indicates a fear of snakes or fear of death (surface level assessment), or perhaps it is more indicative of the success of your personally initiated self-transformation (deeper level assessment, considering the myth and medicine of snake).
In another situation, you go out on a first date. The other person seems nice enough, but as the date goes on, you get an awful stomach ache. You try to ignore it, but the pain persists to the point where you have to end the date early and get out of there. Later as you rest at home you hear in your mind 'gut feeling' and you realize that the 'stomach ache' you were experiencing was actually a warning sign that this person was not right for you.
On the surface these examples can be easily explained away, but when allowed to settle in, a deeper meaning emerges.
Another potential for why Spirit chooses these familiar descriptions, is that they are packed with meaning.
Take this example from a reading I had yesterday: A client wanted to know more about the man she'd been dating for a while now. I saw literal images of the Italian adventurer, and simultaneously heard the catch phrase, "he's a real Casanova." and also, "he has his hands in many honey pots." and, "he is on an endless hero's quest."
These descriptions, while only short phrases, paint a much more in-depth picture for my client of this mans character and outlook on life, rather than if I had simply related to her that this man is seeing other women.
So, when Spirit uses these methods of communicating, they are really maximizing everyone's time and experience, because it gives you a lot to chew on, a lot to thing about, and it allows you to apply the quips, and your knowledge of the archetypes and myths that are playing out, to your life and relationships in ways that can be truly profound, transformative, and healing.
For instance, having your partner described as a white knight whose sole duty is to protect you, allows you to look at both them - and you - in a new light. -->If he is the knight, then what role am I playing?
One can study and look at myth and the archetypal components of them, and how they relate to their own lives endlessly, and doing so can put you on the fast-track of self discovery and spiritual evolution (because once you recognize a pattern, you have the ability to change it).
The idioms, quips and catch phrases though, oh my gosh how I love these!
Very, very often I hear them coming from deceased loved one's (such as with the hands in the honey pots example above). Commonly, a loved one in Spirit will indicate to me that my client is quite similar to them, by dropping an apple and saying, "the apple doesn't fall from the tree." The loved one then usually goes on to describe just how that is so, and how best my client can work with the given information.
Other frequently heard catch phrases used by Spirit are, "____ is the apple of my eye," "daddy's little girl," "my little girl," "you are in my heart" "(they are) like family." and, "he's got a good head on his shoulders." And you better believe that your loved one in Spirit is absolutely thrilled when their sayings get across! Oh they love it when their message is truly received, as they have gone to great lengths, and efforts to deliver it.
So, yes, I feel that the role that myth plays in our lives is so deep as to be endless. Not only are the themes carried out in our lives, but Spirit utilizes the stories, images, and lessons to assist us on our paths, as well. So to anyone wishing to connect deeper to themselves - or to Spirit - I say: pickup a good book on mythology - of any culture - settle in, and get ready to go deep! That's what I'll be doing tonight ;)
